Integrated Data System

We are working with other CZOs to develop cross-CZO capabilities for sharing, integrating, analyzing, and preserving CZO data.

CZO datasets are a powerful resource for developing and testing Earth system models. CZOs produce a large volume of data from a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological disciplines as well as spatial and temporal scales. This "flood" of disparate observational data partly reflects a new generation of integrated measurements. For example, most CZOs are using LIDAR imagery, copious isotopic samples, and low-cost sensors; others are also using eddy correlation and embedded sensor networks.

The Santa Catalina Mountains and Jemez River Basin CZO is collecting data from two field areas:

  • Santa Catalina Mountains located north of Tucson in southern Arizona - four sites
  • Jemez River Basin located in north-central New Mexico in the Valles Caldera National Preserve - two zero order basins and one flux tower site.

Our efforts thus far have concentrated on:

  1. Land and Atmosphere
    • a) Airborne LiDAR: Digital Surface Model (DSM), Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Canopy height, intensity, biomass, snow distribution, snow water equivalent; b) Terrestrial LiDAR: DEM and DSM; c) Eddy covariance and fluxes: heat, radiation, water vapor, CO2, evapotranspiration; d) Meteorological variables: precipitation, snow depth, temperature, relative humidity, pressure, wind speed and direction; e) Chemistry of rain, snow and dust; f) Effective energy and mass transfer (EEMT)
  2. Vegetation and Associated Microbiota
    • a) Phenological camera images; b) Greenness Index, Gross Primary Productivity; c) Microbial composition; d) Sap flow
  3. Soil and Saprolite (vadose zone)
    • a) Fluid (water and gas): soil moisture, water potential, temperature, and electric conductivity, chemistry and isotopes for organic and inorganic solutes; b) Solid: mineralogy, isotopes, organic matter content, microbial composition, texture, physical characteristics, soil chemistry; c) Soil depth
  4. Saprolite and Bedrock (saturated zone)
    • a) Fluid: groundwater level, temperature, organic and inorganic chemistry, isotopes; b) Solid: petrology and mineralogy, organic matter content and composition, geochemical composition; c) Ground penetrating radar (GPR)
  5. Surface Water
    • a) Continuous stream flow, electric conductivity, pH, catchment boundaries, stream network; b) Solute chemistry (organic and inorganic) and isotopes; c) Sediment concentration, composition and chemistry; d) cosmogenic isotope abundance in channel bed sediments

The Santa Catalina Mountains and Jemez River Basin CZO is collaborating with the Valles Caldera National Preserve Research Group to share whide area data, including meteorological, water quality, vegetation and spatial data.
