Higher Education

Boulder Creek CZO offers training for students from early undergraduate programs through graduate courses.  Our field monitoring program uses undergraduate work-study students, providing skills, college support, and exposure to and participation in a large research project. Meet our current undergraduate field staff here.  BcCZO supports the Research Experience for Community College Students (RECCS) in Critical Zone Science REU program, described below.

Graduate Education

Boulder Creek CZO has trained graduate students from departments of Geography, Geological Sciences, Environmental Studies, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology.  Our current graduate students are listed here.  Graduate students can participate in courses and seminars on critical zone topics each year.  Examples are described below.

Earth’s Critical Zone

This course is intended to a) introduce the CZ, b) explore a set of questions that address CZ problems, and c) connect your own research to critical zone science. The goal is to help you see new connections, and perhaps see your own discipline within a new light.

Critical Zone seminar  Graduate seminar offered annually in spring semester on a topic relevant to current research in BcCZO.

Spring 2014:  Geog 5241, Suzanne Anderson, Extreme events in the critical zone.
Spring 2015:  Geol 5702, Robert Anderson, Weathering seminar
Spring 2016:  CVEN5833, Hari Rajaram, Critical Zone Processes seminar

Geomorphology seminar

Graduate seminar offered in Geological Sciences every semester, covering topics of interest to the participants, often delving into CZ materials.  Instructor of record generally Greg Tucker.

Research Experience for Community College Students (RECCS) in Critical Zone Science REU Program
Boulder Creek CZO partnered with CIRES (Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences) to develop the RECCS Program, which began as a pilot program in 2014, and is now supported by NSF through 2017.  The program brings 10 community college students to CU for ten weeks in the summer to work with mentors from the Boulder Creek CZO and from CIRES Water in the West program.  RECCS offers field trips to introduce the local landscape and critical zone concepts, skills development training, weekly cohort gatherings, and concludes with a poster session, joint with NCAR’s SOARS program, and oral presentations of research.
