The Earth’s “critical zone” (CZ)--extending from the top of the vegetation canopy to the bottom of groundwater table--provides a host of ecosystem services, and a new paper in the Vadose Zone Journal now suggests incorporating CZ processes into the conventional definition of ecosystem services. This, the authors argue, will offer a more thorough framework for assessing the impacts of climate change and associated disturbances on the Earth’s capacity to continue providing these crucial services.
