I am interested in the effects of bedrock nutrient density on life and topography in the Sierra Nevada Batholith, California. What governs the presence or absence of the soil mantle on granitic terrain in the unglaciated western Sierra Nevada? How does the distribution of plant nutrients, such as phosphorus, across the plutons that comprise the batholith influence forest communities along climatic and topographic gradients? How does the presence or absence of soil modulate weathering and erosion, and ultimately long-term landscape evolution?
