Earth Observation and the Explosion of Earth Data: How emerging tools and approaches are enabling 21st century scientists to address sustainability

Dr. Anthony Aufdenkampe presented the third public lecture in the "Wide-Angle View" Science and Education Seminar Series on Aug. 29 at the Stroud Water Research Center.  His lecture was entitled "Earth Observation and the Explosion of Earth Data: How emerging tools and approaches are enabling 21st century scientists to address sustainability."

Aufdenkampe began by explaining in lay terms the consquences of expential growth and the evidence that many of the worlds resources are already experiencing limits to growth.  He then presented the new national Critical Zone Observatory network, and its mission to develop multi-disciplinary theory of earth surface function, coupled systems models to explore responses and four dimensional datasets to test the theory and models.  He then described the numerous new environmental sensing technologies and data synthesis approaches that are being developed by the investigators at the Christina River Basin CZO and other CZOs around the nation.
