A major research effort was underway the last week of July 2012, led by the faculty and students of the Christina River Basin Critical Zone Observatory (CRB-CZO). They are drilling wells that will allow them to sample groundwater, soils, and rocks to a depth of 70-90 feet in a 100% forested area at the Laurels Preserve. A number of new technologies were being piloted including a mini-sonic Geoprobe drill rig and a multi-port flute liner. As they drilled they extracted a continuous soil and rock core and took depth, temperature, and conductivity measurements.
