ABSTRACT: The morphology of upland landscapes cannot be understood without understanding and quantifying soil formation from bedrock. Here I describe several projects in which field work, remote sensing, analytical geochemistry, and numerical modeling were used to quantify the coevolution of soils and topography in the southwestern U.S. I also describe preliminary work being done to expand this work by constructing a high-resolution soil depth map of the world.
