Policy Relevance of Critical Zone Science
May 9 - 3 PM ET
Presented by Steve Banwart, University of Leeds

Critical Zone science is driven by curiosity and a quest for fundamental understanding of Earth’s surface system.  Drivers also include a number of global grand challenges including sustainable economic development, food and water security and protection of soil, water and biodiversity resources.  A wide range of public policy initiatives tackle these challenges and require scientific evidence to prioritise the most pressing problems to tackle and to guide human intervention to find solutions.  Critical Zone science with its focus on Earth’s thin surface layer that supplies life-sustaining resources is well-placed to provide the required scientific evidence in order to support policy. Some of the high-level intergovernmental policy initiatives such as United Nations (U.N.) conventions on climate, biodiversity and desertification and U.N. sustainable development goals are introduced. Examples of how scientific evidence can support the policy aims are based on recent and ongoing Critical Zone science research. Specific examples will draw on the challenges of soil protection and agricultural production in Europe and worldwide.
