  Research area 7 includes two 15-m diameter vegetation plots, where all the trees have been identified and measured (diameter at breast height, height) and also cored in order to determine stand age. One of the plots is in the pine stand, one in the hardwood stand. Each of these plots has gas wells at 0.5, 1.5, 3, and 5-m depth, where oxygen and carbon dioxide levels are measured every 3 weeks. On 18 October 2016, four soil pits were dug to allow relatively easy access to soil and roots down to 2-m depth. These were intensively sampled over the course of the next few weeks, then the pits were refilled on 22 November 2016.
