We characterize the iron mineral composition using Mossbauer and other methods in the historical plots and elsewhere. The focus is on the crystallinity or amount of short-range-ordered (SRO, e.g., poorly-crystalline) iron phases (which are the most reactive). We test the hypothesis that iron becomes less crystalline moving from deep to shallow in the soil profile.
