Tree age distribution at the Calhoun CZO

Abstract

With a goal of getting some insight into tree age distributions in the Calhoun CZO, we are obtaining cores from all trees in hardwood plots (since trees there are typically uneven aged) and 1/3 of trees in pine plots (since pine stands tend to be even aged). 1040 live trees with dbh>15cm have been surveyed and measured in the 45 vegetation plots throughout the CCZO in hardwood, pine, and mixed forest, and 237 cores have been taken to date. Average tree age ranges from 70 years in pines to over 100 years in hardwoods along Holcombe's Branch.
