Phosphorus (P) is an essential element classified as a macronutrient because of the relatively large amounts of P required by plants. Although P is essential for plant growth, mismanagement of soil P can pose a threat to water quality. Although P is widely distributed in nature, P is not found by itself in elemental form. Phosphorus availability in terrestrial ecosystems depends on soil age, climate, parent material, topographic position, and biota. The objective of my research is to delineate phosphors status in different landscape in Calhoun, South Carolina. Moreover, I am curious about how improving Phosphorus availability by extracting phosphorus which is bounded with Fe in soil because Phosphorus is deficient in most acid soils because soluble inorganic P is fixed by Al and Fe. I am a PhD student in Daniel Markewitz's lab, starting in January 2015.
