Calhoun Research Area 8, the newest and easternmost of the 8 CCZO research areas, includes adjacent pine and hardwood stands.

Research area 8 was initiated on 21 November 2016, when four soil pits were dug to allow relatively easy access to soil and roots down to 2-m depth. Two of the pits are in the hardwood forest, two in the pine forest. These were intensively sampled over the course of a few weeks, then refilled. We have installed two vegetation plots, 1 in pine forest, 1 in hardwood forest, but no other infrastructure.
Map of Research Area 8, an aerial photograph from 1933 over LiDAR slope map. This includes the "smooth triangle" of lightly eroded hardwood forest (perhaps grazing lands, savannah-like in 1933 with scattered trees) at the left of the image, now hardwood forest, and the more heavily eroded lands to the right, now pine forest.
