Shale Hills and Garner Run specimens collected for cross-CZO microbial investigations
Over the next year (April 2016 – March 2017), the cross-CZO microbial ecology working group plans to collect soil samples during peak regional greenness to further the understanding of surface and subsurface microbial ecology and biogeochemistry. Cross-CZO team participant for SSHCZO, Dr. Jason Kaye, has worked with his research group to collect soils along a depth profile following the same protocol implemented at the other participating CZOs. Abiotic and biotic soil properties will be measured and will include: basic soil properties and chemistry, microbial composition and diversity, microbial activity and nutrient cycling, isotopic analyses of 13C and 15N, and carbon chemistry. Specific at SSHCZO, soil pits were dug at mid-slope positions in a shale derived soil at Shale Hills and a sandstone derived soil at Garner Run. Photo credits: Lillian Z Hill
