Water Resources Extension Educators tour the CZO
Water Resources Extension Educators visited Penn State for three days for the Penn State Extension Annual Conference. During their visit to University Park, eight educators toured the CZO to learn the local/regional geology and the various hydrologic studies occurring in the observatory. Since 2007, the CZO team has been investigating the fluxes of energy and water on critical zone processes. Today, the educators were introduced to soil moisture dynamics, macropore flow in the subsurface, geochemical weathering of the shale bedrock to shale-derived soils, and the timing and usage of water in the catchment by the vegetation. This group of educators provides a lot of very applied knowledge to thousands of landowners, farmers and homeowners across the state but they rarely get to hear about some of the more technical research that underpins much of our broader knowledge about water and natural resources.
