Two week field experience kick-off for the 2019 GeoPATHs cohort

Fifteen undergraduates from seven regional institutions arrived at University Park, along with graduate student mentors and faculty experts, to engage in the near surface geophysics field experience.  Based at the CZO, the students learned four geophysical techniques:  field survey and mapping, seismic refraction, resistivity, and ground penetrating radar and thermal imaging.   Long days in the field included hands-on practice of methods and data collection followed by evenings of data processing and analyses.  The experience includes team-building exercises at the High Ropes Course in Stone Valley Recreation Area and science communication with small group presentations of their geophysical interpretations of the Garner Run and Cole Farm catenas.   GeoPATHs is a collaboration between Rutgers University-Newark, Temple University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Dickinson College, and Penn State and takes place at the Susquehanna Shale Hills Critical Zone Observatory.
