Building upon the abandoned well water quality investigations of Wallace Run, this year’s cohort plans to engage with the Centre County Pennsylvania Senior Environmental Corp (CCPaSEC) for intergenerational teaching and learning.  To kick off the project, students teamed with a few of the CCPaSEC members to evaluate the macroinvertebrate populations at two sites on Wallace Run downstream of the abandoned well site.  Techniques demonstrated and used for the collection of macroinvertebrate in stream systems included:  locating riffle sites in the stream channel and disturbing the stream bed (TeenShale Shuffle) to proper netting form and species identification and tally.  Survey data evaluations will join the previous datasets collected and maintained by the CCPaSEC on their website (www.ccpasec.org).  Based on the type and quantity of marcoinvertebrate identified in Wallace Run, survey outcomes reveal water quality continues to maintain a “Fair” rating score for that section of stream reach.
