Without a winter warmup, students forgo the field for the classroom to discover what is in the HACH box.  The 2018-2019 TeenShale cohort received Stream Water Testing Kits by HACH in December and have been waiting for an opportunity to apply these tests to their stream.  Included in each kit are reagents, measuring tubes, flasks, a dropper and instructions to quantify the following parameters:  ammonia (0-2.4 mg/L), nitrate (0-10 mg/L), dissolved oxygen (0.2-20 mg/L), pH (0-14), phosphate (total - 0-40 mg/L) and temperature (-10 to 110 C).  Temperature and pH are measured using a handheld sensor, and the additional parameters are measured using color discs for a visual comparison (color matching) to determine concentration. Now with experience using reagents to quantify concentrations, evaluations from the field stream are coming soon.
