TeenShale 2017-2018 cohort complete the field season with a “mock” spill experiment

New this year, the TeenShale Network participants teamed with members of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to observe the sequence of events surrounding a spill from a shale gas incident.  A small volume of fluorescein, a harmless organic compound commonly used in tracer tests, was added to Black Moshannon Creek near Gorton Road to mimic the release of contaminants.  The students visualized how quickly inputs can disperse in a waterway, the dynamics of flow pathways, and locations within a channel where pooling may exist.  A discussion of hazard abatement procedures followed the “mock” spill.
