Members of the Susquehanna Shale Hills Critical Zone Observatory gave a tour of the CZO to nearly 30 science writers during the SciWri19 conference held this October in State College, Pa. Susan Brantley, distinguished professor of geosciences and director of the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute at Penn State, and Brandon Forsythe, watershed specialist, co-led the trip. The field trip took the science writers to Jo Hays Vista, Shale Hills and Cole Farm. Researchers at each site described the geology and geography of the area, the tools they use to conduct their research, and recent projects and findings. They also fielded many questions from the writers. Participating researchers included Penn State graduate students Joanmarie Del Vecchio, Mike Forgeng, Andrew Shaugnessy, Caitlin Hodges and Perri Silverhart; postdoctoral scholar David Oakley; and Jay Regan, professor of environmental engineering. The conference was organized by the National Association of Science Writers and the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing.
