Salon on Deep Critical Zone Architecture held June 14-18, 2015

An international group of 17 researchers met at Snow Mountain Ranch, Granby, Colorado for 3.5 days of presentations and discussions on the nature of the weathered profile, from soil surface to bedrock showing signs of incipient weathering.   The Salon was hosted by Boulder Creek CZO (NSF EAR 1331828)  to promote cross-CZO science.  The group shared depictions of regolith drawn from geophysical surveys, cores, geochemical analysis, and hydrologic behavior at sites in CZOs and elsewhere.  Models of weathering front advancement paced by topographic stress, frost cracking, and geochemical processes were discussed.  The group outlined a synthesis paper designed to frame our understanding of the relationship between surface topography and the topography of the weathering front, a concept the group called "two topographies".  

The salon was organized by Daniella Rempe (Eel River CZO), Nicole West (Shale Hills CZO), Susan Brantley (Shale Hills/Luquillo CZOs) and Suzanne Anderson (Boulder Creek CZO).
