Five students travelled to Union, South Carolina for a two-day site visit June 6 – June 8 at the Calhoun CZO. This site visit was the culmination of a semester-long critical zone reading group. The first evening the students were hosted by members of Wofford College’s Environmental Studies faculty, Terry Ferguson, Kaye Savage, and John Lane, at the college’s Goodall Environmental Center. At the center Dan Markewitz (UGA) and Dan Richter (Duke) provided a brief intro to the site’s history and current research.
The following day the students met Markewitz and Richter for a site tour. The tour included the long-term soil-ecosystem plots, the experimental watersheds, and soil pits and roadcuts that displayed the highly weathered soils of the Southeastern Piedmont. The final evening was spent at the Calhoun’s headquarters where the students had the opportunity to interact with a current grad student working on characterizing the underlying bedrock of the CCZO.
